I Accept My Portion

I have this thing for coffee cups. I really LoVe my cups. They, for some reason, bring me happiness. My favorite cup changes each day. I guess it depends on my mood that day, which one I choose. After I fill my cup with coffee and a little cream my cup is so much better! Sometimes I am out of cream and I have to choose coffee and milk, which is not really what I want, but I drink it anyhow because that is what I have. Every now and then Sam fills my cup. I prefer to fill it myself because I like just a certain amount of cream. Too much is too much and too little is, well, too little. (You know what I mean.) I drink what he brings to me anyhow. Our Christian life is a lot like our coffee cups. God chooses what goes in our cup. He knows just the right amount of what we need. We need to be content with the portion, and ingredients God puts in our cup!

I mentioned in a recent post about reading the book “Calm My Anxious Heart”. I thought I'd share a little more from this book.

God fills our cup with our portion, what He determines best. Our portion is our physical and emotional being, our abilities, circumstances, roles, and relationships.

Sometimes we don’t like what’s been poured into our cup. Remember the Lord Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane? When He saw the suffering He was about to endure, He pleaded, “Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me; nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” (Luke 22:42). Christ grasped the handle of His cup and lifted it to God and said, “I accept my portion. Infuse me with your strength that I may drink.”

God has placed our portion in our cup. We either choose to grasp it by the handle and lift it to Him, saying, “I accept my portion, I accept this cup,” or we choose to smash our cup to pieces, saying, “God I refuse my portion. This cup is not the right size for me and I don’t like what You’ve put in it. I’ll control my life myself.”

Charles Spurgeon said it this way, “Let it be God’s will, and God will determine for the best. Be thou content to leave thy prayer in His hands, who knows when to give, and how to give, and what to give, and what to withhold.”
